An Alexandria court sentenced an Egyptian blogger to four years in prison on Thursday for insulting both Islam and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Abdel Karim Suleiman, a 22-year-old former law student who has been in custody since November, was the first blogger to stand trial in Egypt for his Internet writings. He was convicted in connection with eight articles he wrote since 2004.

Rights groups and opposition bloggers have watched Suleiman’s case closely, and said they feared a conviction could set a legal precedent limiting Internet freedom in Egypt, the Arab world’s most populous country.

There have been a lot of negative stories lately about blogging.  From the Video Blogger that was thrown in jail for refusing to turn over his videotape, to the little blog trashing session the White House Press Corp had trashing bloggers, to this.

It is apparent that bloggers are “threatening” a lot of people with the sheer power of People Powered Press.

Sometimes I forget that the rest of the world doesn’t have the freedom to think out loud like we do.  One day I had slammed Bush and I thought “this is still a great country.  I’d probably go to jail or be beheaded in some places for saying what I think of my president.”
